The Princess of Wales's Traditional Festive Carol Concert Spotlights Charity Helpers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The large audience will listen to a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to official duties subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the charity, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the concert.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for food banks.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
